A Unique Afternoon at Flamingo Park
September, 2014As a matter of fact, I like to visit in the morning, when there are less people and it’s cool (at least during this season). The Flamingo is a park established in 1950, approximately 14 hectares (34 ½ acres), stretching roughly between 11th and 14th street and between Michigan and Meridian Avenue. It is ideal for walking, reading on the benches, taking a nap in the shade of the trees. It’s also a great place to to exercise, watch young men play basketball, to take your dog for a walk, and to watch children in the playground that’s dedicated to them.
Inside the park there is a well equipped sports center, a swimming pool (with water always kept around 80°F), baseball fields (the best in South Florida, it seems), basketball, football, handball, an 8-lane running track, and as many as 17 newly renovated tennis courts.
All of these activities require a small fee, although quite affordable. For instance, the entrance to the pool is free for residents, and is $10 for nonresident adults, $6 for children; the tennis courts are $5 for residents and $10 for non-residents (you can also take classes). For more information on fees and schedules, please visit the Flamingo Park section of Parks and Recreation website.
In any case, everywhere in the park is free to work-out in, just bring a towel and lie down on the grass, or run between the trees, bike, or tire yourself out with a personal trainer … you just have to want to.
